On April 2, the United States announced that it will impose "reciprocal tariffs" on all trading partners including China. China resolutely opposes this and will take necessary measures to firmly safeguard its legitimate rights and interests.
The US decision to impose additional tariffs disregards the balance of interests achieved through years of multilateral trade negotiations, and ignores the fact that the US has long reaped huge benefits from international trade. The so-called “reciprocal tariffs” announced by the US are based on subjective and unilateral assessments, which gravely violate WTO rules and damage the rules-based multilateral trading system as well as the legitimate rights and interests of the relevant parties. This is a typical unilateral bullying practice.
There are no winners in trade wars, and protectionism leads nowhere. China urges the US to immediately cancel its unilateral tariff measures and resolve differences with its trading partners through dialogue at an equal footing. China stands ready to work with Canada and other countries to firmly safeguard multilateralism and the multilateral trading system, continue to promote inclusive economic globalization that benefits all, and maintain the stability of the global trading system.
