Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy on Canada’s False Accusation of China’s Interference in Its Internal Affairs

Recently, some Canadian politicians and media have been hyping up the so-called interference in Canada’s federal elections and internal affairs by Chinese consulates general. This is pure slander and total nonsense. China deplores and rejects this.

China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. The Chinese consulates general perform their consular functions in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the bilateral consular agreement between China and Canada, which is consistent with international law and international practices, and is aboveboard and beyond reproach.

Over the years, a handful of western countries including Canada have been constantly seeking political manipulation over Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and other related issues, condoning and supporting anti-China separatist activities, and undermining China’s security and stability overtly and covertly. These are out-and-out interference in China’s internal affairs! With ulterior motives, some Canadian politicians and media patched up false reports and spread all kinds of disinformation. These actions seriously deceived and misled the public, poisoning the atmosphere of China-Canada relations. It must be pointed out that only those well-versed in spying can fabricate the outrageous lies as reported in the media. Only those accustomed to interfering in other countries’ internal affairs are prone to suspicion and preoccupied with playing the trick of feigning innocence and calling others a thief.

Relations between countries can only be built on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. China-Canada relations are no exception. The Chinese side urges the Canadian side to discard ideological bias, immediately stop stigmatizing Chinese consular institutions and personnel that are performing their normal duties, stop slandering and attacking China, and avoid creating new obstacles and troubles for the development of bilateral relations.
