Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy on the Taiwan-related report published by the Canadian Special Committee on the Canada-People’s Republic of China Relationship

On March 30th, the Canadian House of Commons Special Committee on the Canada-People's Republic of China Relationship (CACN) published a Taiwan-related report, making wild talks on Taiwan-related issues, claiming that "the one-China principle is markedly different from Canada's one-China policy", slandering China as a threat to regional peace and stability. By publishing such a report, the CACN attempts to obscure and hollow out the one-China principle, and grossly interfere in China's internal affairs, which constitutes a flagrant provocation to the Chinese people. The Chinese side strongly deplores and firmly rejects this.

There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is part of China. The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the entire China. This is written down clearly in Resolution 2758, adopted at the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly in 1971. It is the basic norm in international relations and the political foundation of China-Canada relations. It must be pointed out that be it the one-China principle or the one-China policy, their essence is both about "one China".

The fundamental cause of the tensions in the Taiwan Strait is the Taiwan authorities' repeated attempt to solicit the US support for "Taiwan independence" and some in the US intend to use Taiwan to contain China. Some Canadian politicians have been getting swayed by the US and making trouble on Taiwan-related issues. This once again shows that those who are making provocations are not China, but some external forces including Canada, the US, and the separatist forces for "Taiwan independence".

The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair. Resolving the Taiwan question is a matter for the Chinese and brooks no foreign interference. We call on the Canadian politicians to stop engaging in political manipulation of the Taiwan question, stop undermining China's interests, stop creating new obstacles in bilateral relations, and not go further down the wrong path.
