Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy on the Visit of the Canadian Members of Parliament to Taiwan

Recently, 10 Canadian Members of Parliament, including John McKay, Michael Chong, and Ken Hardie, in disregard of China's stern position, insisted on visiting China's Taiwan region, where they met with Tsai Ing-wen, leader of the Taiwan region, and called  Taiwan as a ''nation''. The words and actions of those MPs constitute official interactions between Canada and Taiwan, seriously violate the one-China principle, seriously infringe upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and send a seriously wrong signal to the ''Taiwan independence'' separatist forces. China strongly condemns this.

There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations. It is also the prerequisite and basis for China to establish and develop diplomatic relations with other countries. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, on the basis of the one-China principle, China has established diplomatic relations with 182 countries. This fully shows that the one-China principle has the overwhelming support and recognition of the international community and represents the irreversible trend of the times.

These MPs, proceeding from their own political interests, visited Taiwan under the sponsorship of the Taiwan authorities and flagrantly claimed that ''Taiwan's fight is Canada's fight''. This pathetic performance of endorsing the ''Taiwan independence'' separatist forces is ridiculous and nonsense. By doing so, they are running against the trend of the times, pitting themselves against the 1.4 billion Chinese people, confronting the international community and are doomed to fail.

Taiwan is China's Taiwan. Taiwan has never been a country over the years, and will never be a country in the future, either. The Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair. It is at the very core of China's core interests. The Chinese government and the Chinese people will never stand for anyone trying to take advantage of the Taiwan question. If anyone expects China to compromise and concede on the Taiwan question, they are having a pipe dream and would shoot themselves in the foot. We urge the concerned MPs to focus on the mounting problems within Canada and take care of the business in their own country, immediately stop the unseemly political farce on the Taiwan question, stop colluding and interacting with the ''Taiwan independence'' separatist forces, stop harming China's core interests. Otherwise, they will have to pay a heavy price for their wrong behaviors.
