Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada

Q:On November 18, sources were quoted by the Globe and Mail as saying that Canadian citizens were suspected of engaging in espionage activities in China. But the spokesperson of the Global Affairs of Canada denied this and again accused China of “arbitrary detention”. What are your comments?

A: China is a country under the rule of law. Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are suspected of engaging in activities endangering China's national security. The Chinese judicial authorities have been handling the cases in strict accordance with the law. The recent reports of Canadian media have once again proven that these facts cannot be denied. Canada's hyping up of the so-called “arbitrary detention” by China is purely a thief crying “stop thief.” This fully exposes the hypocrisy of the Canadian side. We urge the Canadian side to face the facts and deeply reflect upon its mistakes instead of continuing to attack and smear China, and misleading and deceiving the Canadian public.
