Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada

Recently, the Canadian side sanctioned Chinese individuals under the pretext of so-called human rights violations. In accordance with the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Countering Foreign Sanctions, and for the purpose of safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests, and protecting the lawful rights and interests of Chinese citizens and organizations, China has decided to take countermeasures against the relevant Canadian institutions and individuals.

On December 24, Global Affairs Canada issued a statement in which it once again distorted facts and put up a hypocritical political stunt under the pretext of human rights. China firmly opposes this and demands the Canadian side to stop disseminating lies that blatantly smear China’s human rights situation, stop interfering in China’s internal affairs in any form, and stop making political manipulations with human rights issues. China urges the Canadian side to reflect on itself, and face squarely and improve its own human rights situation.

China is widely recognized as one of the safest countries in the world. We have always welcomed foreign nationals to travel, study, do business and live in China, and have taken effective measures to ensure their safety in China. In the first 11 months of this year, 29.218 million foreign visitors entered China, an increase of 86.2 percent year on year. “China Travel” is gaining in global popularity.

In light of the current domestic political climate in Canada and the rampant scams targeting Chinese citizens, the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in Canada remind Chinese citizens in Canada to stay on higher alert and take extra safety precautions. The Chinese Embassy and Consulates stand ready to provide consular services to Chinese citizens in Canada anytime and will resolutely safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.
