On November 27, 2024, Chinese Ambassador to Canada H.E. Wang Di paid a courtesy call to the Honourable Raymonde Gagné, Speaker of the Senate of Canada.
Ambassador Wang conveyed to Speaker Gagné the cordial greetings of H.E. Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. He noted that China and Canada have a long history of exchanges and profound traditional friendship, and expressed his hope that Canada will work with China in the spirit of right perception, mutual respect, seeking common ground while reserving differences, and mutually beneficial cooperation, and do more to enhance mutual trust and promote exchanges and cooperation. China is ready to work with Canada to strengthen mutual visits and exchanges between the legislative bodies of the two countries, so as to enhance mutual understanding, and inject dynamism and vitality for the healthy and stable development of China-Canada relations.
Ambassador Wang stressed that the Taiwan question is at the core of China’s core interests and forms the political bedrock of China-Canada relations. It is a red line that shall never be crossed. We hope that Canada will earnestly abide by the one-China principle.
Speaker Gagné conveyed her warm regards to Chairman Zhao Leji through Ambassador Wang. She expressed her readiness to deepen exchanges between the legislative bodies of the two countries and to promote bilateral pragmatic cooperation in the fields of agriculture, education and climate change, etc. She stressed that Canada is committed to the one-China policy and stands ready to develop a constructive, dynamic and cooperative Canada-China relationship.
