Chinese Ambassador to Canada H.E. Wang Di Visited Alberta

On November 25-27, 2025, Chinese Ambassador to Canada H.E. Wang Di visited Alberta. During the visit, Ambassador Wang had meetings with the Honourable Premier Danielle Smith, the Honourable Lieutenant Governor Salma Lakhani, and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Ric McIver. He also held a roundtable with Edmonton Global and other representatives from Alberta’s business community. The Ambassador was accompanied by Consul General Zhao Liying of the Chinese Consulate General in Calgary.

During the meetings, Ambassador Wang gave a comprehensive briefing on the outcomes of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. He highlighted that the recent successful meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Mark Carney brought about a complete turnaround in the China-Canada relationship. China supports its provinces to work with Alberta to implement the important consensus reached by the two leaders, and seize the opportunity to strengthen cooperation in more areas so as to contribute to the further improvement of the bilateral relations and bring more benefits to the two peoples. Ambassador Wang expressed the hope that the Alberta government will protect the lawful and legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese citizens and institutions even better, and create a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies in Alberta.

Premier Smith stressed that the successful meeting between the two leaders sends an important positive signal. Alberta looks forward to expanding cooperation with China and is willing to strengthen exchanges with Chinese sister provinces, conduct sub-national interactions, and deepen practical cooperation in areas such as energy, agriculture, tourism, and winter sports. Alberta remains committed to contributing to the improvement and development of Canada-China relations and supports enhanced communication between the federal government of Canada and China to address each other’s concerns.

Lieutenant Governor Lakhani and Speaker McIver noted that Alberta is ready to seize the important opportunity presented by the improvement in Canada-China bilateral relations to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China and deepen the friendship between the two peoples.

Representatives from the local business emphasized the importance of the Chinese market, welcomed the new chapter in Canada-China relations, and said they look forward to strengthening economic and trade ties with China and expanding cooperation in areas such as energy, petrochemical products, and air transportation.

During the visit, Ambassador Wang also met with representatives of the local Chinese diaspora and Chinese scholars and students. They expressed their elation to see the latest positive changes in China-Canada relations and their support for the Alberta government to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China. They were committed to continuously playing the role as a bridge for China-Canada friendship and also expressed firm support for the great cause of the reunification of the motherland.
