Remarks of the Spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy on the Canadian side congratulating the election in China’s Taiwan region

On January 13, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada expressed its so-called congratulations on the election in China’s Taiwan region, which seriously violates the one-China principle. We strongly deplore and firmly oppose this and has lodged solemn representations with the Canadian side.

The Taiwan question is China’s internal affairs. The elections in Taiwan are the affairs of a region in China that brook no external interference. The one-China principle is a basic norm in international relations, a prevailing consensus among the international community, and the political foundation of China-Canada relations. We urge the Canadian side to fully recognize the highly sensitive nature of the Taiwan question, strictly observe the one-China principle, immediately stop the wrong words and deeds on Taiwan-related issues, stop all forms of meddling in China’s internal affairs, stop sending any wrong signals to “Taiwan independence” separatist forces, and prudently and properly handle Taiwan-related issues, so as to avoid further damage to China-Canada relations.
