In his recent exclusive interview with Reuters, H. E. Wang Di, Chinese Ambassador to Canada, addressed the issue of global governance as follows:

Reuters: Canadian Prime Minister Carney has described this rupture in the Canada-US relationship and the rest of the world, actively calling on middle powers to seek new alliances. And that happened shortly before his visit to Beijing. When he was there, he described China as a more reliable, predictable partner. How does China see itself in that global order that Prime Minister Carney has described?

Ambassador Wang Di: China’s consistent position is to defend the spirit of the UN Charter, which is to protect the UN-centered international system, the international order based on the international law, and the norms of international relations anchored on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. The world today is seeing increasing uncertainties and instabilities. And the risks and challenges that the international community is facing are also on the rise. De-globalization, unilateralism and protectionism trends are becoming more intense. In this kind of situation, China firmly advocates building an equal and orderly multi-polar world and promotes universally beneficial, inclusive economic globalization. To that end, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Governance Initiative to move global governance in the right direction that meets the expectation of people of all countries and that is more just and equitable. Canada also takes transforming and reforming global governance very seriously. As you mentioned, Prime Minister Carney also put forward Canada’s proposition. Both China and Canada participate in and support multilateralism, free trade and global governance, so we look forward to strengthening communication and coordination with Canada on global governance.
