In his recent exclusive interview with Reuters, H. E. Wang Di, Chinese Ambassador to Canada, touched upon China’s consistent support for Canada’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as follows:
Reuters: One last question. You said that China views itself very much of upholding the global multilateral order established for decades. So how does China view US President Trump’s threats to annex Greenland and Canada? And we’ve seen US violate Venezuela’s sovereignty. What does it think of those actions? Is it concerned that the US could violate Canada’s sovereignty, for example, in the Arctic? We understand that China has an increasing interest in that region, what does China think about that?
Ambassador Wang Di: The principle of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity is a principle that China has been advocating and upholding. And it is also an important part of the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China has consistently supported Canada’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. I say this not because now China-Canada relations have improved. Even when we were having difficulties, China was also unequivocal on this issue. Sovereignty is a sacred thing for any country in the world that should not be violated.
